GIMP é um acrônimo para GNU Image Manipulation Program. É um programa distribuído gratuitamente para composição e tratamento de imagens.

Pode ser usado como um simples programa para desenho, para edição avançada de fotografias, para  renderização em lote de imagens ou para converter formatos de imagens.

Trabalho de faculdade

A história do GIMP é bem interessante, dois estudantes de uma universidade da Califórnia começaram um projeto para a faculdade e acabaram dandocontinuidade a ele após se formarem. Depois lançaram-se na internet sob  a licença GNU e programadores de todo o mundo, surpresos e interessados pela grande qualidade do software, resolveram juntar-se ao projeto.

Entre suas funcionalidades, pode-se destacar:

 

  • Uma vasta quantidade de ferramentas para criação de imagens, tanto bitmaps quanto vetoriais, tais como: Brush, Pencil, Airbrush, Clone etc. Possui, também, um sistema de alta qualidade de anti-aliasing (correção de serrilhado) e uma poderosa ferramenta para aplicar efeitos de gradiente e mistura, permitindo aplicar efeitos incríveis em qualquer imagem.
     
  • Utiliza um sistema base de gerenciamento de memória fazendo com que o único limite para o tamanho de sua imagem é o seu espaço livre em disco! E mais, você ainda pode abrir simultaneamente quantas janelas você quiser (conseguir).
     

Editor de imagens avançado.

  • Ainda possui opções de manipulação avançada de imagens como: suporte completo ao canal alpha (transparência), camadas e canais totalmente manipuláveis, múltiplo desfazer/refazer limitados apenas pelo espaço livre em disco, camadas de texto editáveis, ferramentas avançadas de transformação e seleção, máscaras modeláveis e muito mais!
